A Monkey Tale
The team arrived back in Addis Sunday afternoon. Some of the team was feeling sick during our ride. The roads were beautiful but full of people and animals.
Towards the last half of our journey we hit a little bump in the road. Actually a large wild monkey came charging out onto the road. Our awesome driver didn’t want to risk our safety so he chose not to swerve ( praise God!). We love monkeys but we all agreed people were more important.
Those who saw it said the large monkey actually accelerated into the van as we plowed over it. Maybe it was a crazy or depressed. After we ran over the monkey Sharon said, “good thing that wasn’t a goat, we would have had to pay for it.”
Ironically, the next day we took a tour to the Addis natural history museum which is home to Lucy. We then ate a the Lucy cafe for lunch. There were chuckles all through the museum while seeing the monkey displays as we remember striking the Lucy like creature the day before.
Unforgettable
On Friday we hosted a VBS.
Pastor Zewdie assured us the nearly five hundred children who came to our VBS program would never forget that day. I doubt we will either. It started in a village church over an hour away from Soddo.
After a time of worship we took the kids outside for a game of “stop and go” (also known as red light green light but these kids haven’t seen stop lights so we changed the words). At first the kids had selective hearing. At the word GO the mass of little people would charge ahead but when someone yelled STOP they just kept going until they reached and consumed Jeremy who waited for them at the end of the field. He was very brave. Isaac and Alex ended up going military style on the kids, starting them in ranks, the running alongside them and yelling loudly. That worked well! After games we took the children inside for worship, a skit and then craft. The team reenacted and then taught on the story of Jesus walking on water.
Thursday Evening
In the evening we were invited to dinner at Pastor Zewdies home. We met his wife and children and worshipped together.
All Things New
One widow we visited just moved into her home. The mud was still wet on the walls. We always received such joyful greetings when we arrived, and so much thankfulness after praying and giving out new clothes.
